This post is an index of our survey of the voting patterns of the swing states in the US presidential election. The links to each individual state guide are below. Accompanying our survey are tables compiling the 2008 results of a selection of key counties that will be useful reference for those following the election count. These tables of 2008 county results contain three groups of counties:
- The large urban counties which individually contributed 2% or more to the final state-wide vote tally
- The “bellwether counties” which were carried by the winning candidate in the states in each 2000, 2004 & 2008
- The “swing counties” where the 2008 margin was within 2% of the state-wide margin.
The former group of counties should give you an idea if the urban areas, where the Democrats strength usually lies and will provide the 2008 margins and turnout for the Democrats which resulted in a Democratic victory in a given state. The latter two groups of counties are indicators if the Republicans are overturning the Democratic gains of four years ago.
